Travels of an Island Minister

Entry for May 14, 2007
I start school in the morning! Yesterday, as I was getting off the boat, Nassor (a guy my age) approached me with a place to stay called the Jambo Inn. I had read about it on the internet and agreed to go with him to look at the room (easy choice since I had no other plans). It turns out that his place was called the Annex of Abdullah (near the Jambo Inn :) The room was a fair price, and his friend took me in a taxi for free- so within ten minutes I had a place to stay for awhile- one major hurdle down. Nassor agreed to show me around and take me to the school (the fact that he'd even heard about it thrilled me!) After I got checked in, we left the hotel, walked about three blocks, and stood outside the Institute of Kiswahili and Foreign Languages. The school could have been anywhere on the island around Stone Town- and I end up in a guest house close enough to hit it with a rock! Not that this should surprise me (or any of you by now:) That was yesterday (Sunday) and the school was closed. I found my way back at 8am this morning and within maybe a half an hour had met my teacher, enrolled, and gotten my book. I've missed the first week of lessons, but feel I can jump in pretty seemlessly- the teachers also thought so (I think I used every word I knew when I greeted them:) Oh yeah, I'm apparently going to grow quite the beard since I forgot to use a converter this morning when I fired up my trimmer. It started up at super speed then fried itself in my hand. No words followed that, just a 'sigh' and a cold shower.

Evan,

Wow! Looks like things are "falling into place", including you :) I can't wait to hear how school goes. I'm believing Swahili will just begin to flow out of you! I'm praying against all blockages. Sorry about your trimmer :( , but I do love when your beard grows and your hair grows and you look like Jesus :) Maybe that's His plan :)
